Sue Wetherall and Emily Estelle first started Picnic at the Petite Prom in 2017, after Isabel Hospice had cared for their husband/father John Wetherall, and they wanted to raise much needed funds for the Hospice as a way of saying thank you. Sue has been involved with the Hospice for many years and always supported the charity.
The event proved to be very successful and after the sad lose of John, Sue and Emily went on to organise another in concert 2021, which once again proved to be a huge success. To date they have raised over £34,000. So here they are, two years later and due to popular demand organising another event!
Set under the stars in a picturesque Hadham garden come and join them for a magical evening of live music and song of well-known Movie music – all in aid of Isabel Hospice. Bring a picnic and chair and sit back and enjoy performances from professional artists performing songs the likes of James Bond, Westside Story, Back to Africa, Grease and many more!
On Friday 23rd June, the annual Madrigals Concert at Amwell Pool took place.
Julia Davies, who attended the evening along with a large number of other locals, said it was ‘a beautiful evening in aid of Isabel Hospice’.
Local resident, Betty Sewell, organised the first concert over 40 years ago! It has become a much -anticipated annual event – the music and stunning setting makes the evening truly magical.
Thank you to the organisers and the choirs involved. We look forward to the next concert!

It’s that time again for the highly popular Madrigals Concert at Amwell Pool.
The Haileybury Madrigal Singers will be performing this year’s concert on the island at Amwell Pool, Lower Road, Great Amwell (below the Church) at 9.00pm on Friday 23rd June.
The collection taken will be in aid of Isabel Hospice.
St John the Baptist Primary School pupils circa 1947–1955 in the past have been very loyal and made this happen at least several times since 1999. We now think this may be the last time that we’re able to meet due to moving and circumstances.
The date of our last meeting will be Thursday June 9th 2023 at The George IV Pub, from 11.30/12noon. A walk around the village followed by some lunch is the usual format!
Please contact Jennifer on 01438 358404 or 07960381339 if you are able to come.
Looking forward to meeting again and exchanging all our memories…
This Sunday (14th May) it is Rogation Day, so The 3 Churches Benefice are holding a special 10.30am Rogation Day Service at the historic church of St James, which is the old Parish Church of Stanstead Abbots. This is a fantastic opportunity to join in a thanksgiving service as well as chance to appreciate the history of St James.
After the service, meeting outside the church at 11.30am, there will be a traditional ‘Beating the Bounds’ walk, led by Miles Dymock. Do remember to wear appropriate clothing for the weather, sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water!
Miles kindly gave us some additional information about the walk he has planned: The walk across along the Parish Boundary on Olives Farm reveals one of the many quirks of Medieval England, where in the 1500s Henry VIII altered the Stanstead Abbotts and Hunsdon Parish Boundaries in buying Olives Farm, which he purchased for its supply of spring water that fed into the newly created Fish Ponds that were central to his new Park, Ponds Park.
This was one of a number of formal Deer Parks, which were effectively enclosed spaces around Hunsdon House in which it was possible to stage manage a deer hunt with a high chance of success, though Ponds Park was possibly the most ornamental and may have been influenced by Italian gardens of a similar scale that Henry had seen in his youth. Many of these original deer parks will shortly be being paved over by the Gilston Development or be mined by the potential quarry development.
For those that are not proposing to walk the entire Parish Boundary the walk from the church to Olives Farm and back is approximately 3.5 miles and decent walking boots are recommended as it can get extremely muddy. The plan will be to stop at Olives Farm for refreshments, which is the halfway point on the circular walk and if anyone is interested to see some of the many Roman remains found in the fields over the years I’ll have these set out in one of the barns.
This is open to everyone, so do go along if you are interested!
Stanstead Abbotts Local History Society (SALHS) are holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday 12th May, 7.30pm at Stanstead Abbotts’ Parish Hall.
The AGM will be followed by ‘Memories of Stanstead Abbotts’, which promises to be really interesting.
