The Big Step Out 2025 at Hatfield House

Hertfordshire Health Walks with be joining charity Stepping Out with Carers on Wednesday 11th June at Hatfield House for The Big Step Out 2025. This event is dedicated to the nation’s 10 million unpaid carers and the people they care for. Several scenic, sociable and fabulous walks will be on offer, as well as music, lunch, stalls and more!

Stepping Out with Carers offer walks throughout Hertfordshire including lunch at many of the county’s most beautiful venues. Designed as a boost to physical and mental wellbeing as well as a great way to meet new friends, these walks are free of charge. Their walks at every venue are graded to cater equally for those who use a wheelchair or have other mobility issues. Their offer includes transport for those who would not otherwise be able to attend. Carers may come on their own or bring the person they care for.

Explore Local Volunteering Opportunities at GoVolHerts Community Event in Hitchin

Our community would not be what it is without the amazing volunteers who give their time freely to help others – and in the process often have a great time themselves! People don’t always realise the huge difference that volunteering makes in our community or that volunteering takes so many shapes and sizes, with hundreds of different organisations and roles that volunteers can be involved in. Our Volunteer Fair will celebrate volunteers in all their glory and, with more than 20 local organisations taking part it will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the many different types of volunteering and how you could get involved too.   

Emily Butterworth, Volunteering Development Lead at GoVolHerts, shared:  ‘We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone to this event in the heart of Hitchin. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet the incredible people behind our local charities and learn about the vital role volunteers play in their work. We’re delighted to have a wide range of amazing organisations taking part, all eager to share how the public can get involved and the fantastic impact that they can achieve through volunteering. We’re honoured to be joined also by local dignitaries and representatives from Hertfordshire County Council. Whether you’re looking to try something new, build confidence, or find a meaningful way to give back, this event is the perfect place to start. The Volunteer Fair in Hitchin is part of Hertfordshire’s celebration of Volunteers Week, a national event to celebrate and showcase the contribution of volunteers in our community. With Athos, Porthos and Aramis, D’Artagnan must help to defeat the evil Cardinal Richelieu and Milady de Winter, but their quest will not be easy…

Join us as we bring this action-filled adventure to life in a dynamic and hilarious staging of the much-loved novel – expect puppetry, plot twists and just a little bit of mayhem as we bring you our ‘must-see’ show packed with song, silliness and sword fights… Lots of sword fights!

Join us for Rogation Sunday

You are invited to the annual Rogation Day Service at St James’ Church, Roydon Road, Stanstead Abbotts on Sunday 25th May 2025 at 11am.  All are welcome to this special thanksgiving service in the beautiful old Parish Church of St James.

Traditionally Rogation Day included ‘beating the bounds’, which was an opportunity to re-establish the area considered to be the Parish of Stanstead Abbotts and to ensure the boundaries were clear. This year, we will meet outside St James’ Church at approximately 12pm and head out on a short, led walk that is suitable for families. Do wear sturdy shoes, bring a bottle of water and, if the weather in nice, why not bring a picnic!

Stanstead Abbotts Concert Society will be holding their next music event on Sunday 18th May.

‘Pete Morton is a singer and entertainer who is often referred to as an old time troubadour. He delivers an unruly freewheeling mix of storytelling, comedy and song that weaves it’s way around the folk tradition. His current show ‘The Ghost of a Sailor’s talking blues’ is a joyful ramble through time (not necessarily in the right order!), in the style of the talking blues, as well as unleashing popular singalong chorus from the last 400 years. Originally from Leicester, England, Pete discovered the acoustic music scene at 16, and has been on the never-ending tour internationally ever since. With his powerful, euphonious voice storytelling and compelling stage presence he continues his merry niche, singing songs and entertaining with a fun-loving and approachable style.’ (Source: https://www.petemorton.com/)

VE Day 80th Anniversary

8th May 1945 was a day of immense relief and celebration across Britain and the Commonwealth after nearly six years of conflict.

During the war years, the villages of Great Amwell, St Margarets and Stanstead Abbotts played their part in the national effort. Residents served in the armed forces and civil defence roles, while the countryside and local facilities were used for various wartime purposes. Local residents would have experienced rationing, blackouts and the arrival of evacuees. The local railway line was a key part of the transportation network, linking local communities with the broader wartime logistics system.

This year’s 80th anniversary commemorations not only honoured the past, but also brought the community together in a shared act of remembrance and unity.


Stanstead Abbotts & St Margarets Village Club
The Village Club was a hub of celebration on Sunday 4th May.Organised by The Village Club in partnership with Stanstead Abbotts and St Margarets Parish Councils, the event that ran from 12 to 4pm welcomed visitors to 4–6 High Street for an afternoon filled with music, fun and community spirit.

St John the Baptist Church, Great Amwell
In Great Amwell, delicious cream teas were served from 2.30pm on Sunday 4th May in the beautiful setting of St John the Baptist Church to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day.

It was a lovely afternoon. Sitting in the quiet of the historic church, provided an opportunity for members of the community to come together, reflect and remember the significance of the day.

Information of wartime life in the villages, where Spitfires shot up our High Street, Flying Bombs took roofs off, and where our brave soldiers and airmen fought and fell are to be found on two notice boards in the villages:

One on the Local History Board at the High Street car park entrance and the other (with extra photos of VE Day street parties) outside the entrance to The Village Club (Home Guard HQ 1939–45).

These will be on show for the next few days for all to see.

As the nation reflects on eight decades since the end of the war in Europe, local commemorations such as these serve to remind us of the importance of remembering history, honouring sacrifice and preserving peace.

Jimmy Riddles Toilet Hire is kindly supplying us with a portaloo for the weekend.

All money we raise goes to Friends of the Wild Rescue and Rehab, a volunteer run and self-funded wildlife rescue based in Bishops Stortford, covering the Bishops Stortford area plus surrounding villages. They help all small wildlife, ranging from orphan birds and mammals through to animals with injuries such as broken legs/wings and cat attack injuries. Noel Robinson performing at Hertfordshire Studios!

Noel Robinson is a London born singer, songwriter, guitarist and worship leader. Noel ministers internationally, which allows him to travel extensively around the world, leading, teaching and training worshippers in diverse settings. Noel’s heart is to see the Church empowered and revived as agents of change and transformation in this world.

Noel primarily plays and mixes Contemporary Christian Music style with gospel music. He has released five studio albums: O Taste and See (1996); Worthy in This Place (2001) with Nu Image; Garment of Praise (2006) with Nu Image; Devoted (2013); and Outrageous Love, a live album (2015).

He is performing at the Hertfordshire Studios, Brewery Road, Hoddesdon, EN11 8HF on Friday 25th April, 1–2pm (doors open 12.30pm).

Entrance is free, but donations welcome.

Come and try lawn green bowling

Many of you living around Hoddesdon may have memories of the Old Highway Recreation Ground from playing there in your youth or your children and grandchildren enjoying the area. 

At Hoddesdon and Rye Park Bowling Club we have been playing our sport in the grounds since 1937. Along the way we have had a lot of success with members representing England: recently a member represented Disability Bowls England in South Africa. 

Many of own club competitions are still being played for trophies presented by, or in memorium to, past members. Some being recognised as persons of note from the area: Haward, Partfitt, Smailes, Howe, Blackaby, Mascot, Varney and many more. 

Our membership is made up of residents from the local area and nearby towns and villages.

In April we are again hosting free sessions to come and give our sport a try. Bowls is played as competitively as you want, but it is a great game for persons of all abilities with a chance to have a social game and one where you can make many friends.

‘Bowls is not just and older persons sport it is a game that older person can play.’
