Great Amwell Beacon Event: a fantastic evening!

On Thursday 2nd June residents of Great Amwell were able to meet on the Vicar’s Field (with the kind permission of St. John the Baptist School) and enjoy the sunshine and some fun together before the Platinum Jubilee beacon lighting at 9:45, to coincide with all other beacons across the Commonwealth.  Some lively games of rounders were played, children and adults had their faces painted and the souvenir mugs were handed out to provide a memento of what was truly a unique event, all to a well-judged soundtrack of music that easily overcame the neighbouring music festival.

The beacon was lit by Tom Foy as Chair of Great Amwell Parish Council and was spectacular. Indeed, someone called the fire brigade who were obliged to attend; although on a night of national beacon-lighting, this was probably not the only place that this happened. Hopefully, the young who came will look back in years to come and be able to say, ‘I remember the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee’.

The event was organised by Suzie Nichol and supported by East Herts District Council, Great Amwell Parish Council, St. John the Baptist Church and Parish Hall, the Amwell Society, and generous private donations.

National Day of Reflection: Wednesday 23rd March

The 3 Churches Benefice is supporting the National Day of Reflection on 23 March, the first anniversary of the UK lockdown, to commemorate this tragic loss of life and to stand together with everyone who’s grieving.

Organised by Marie Curie, the National Day of Reflection looks to reflect on our collective loss, support those who’ve been bereaved, and hope for a brighter future.

Join us at St Mary the Virgin, St Margarets for a Midday Service of Reflection. It will be a short service of prayer, music and reflection.

Everyone welcome!

Rev’d Dr Sarah Forrest

Christmas with The 3 Churches Benefice

We were able to celebrate the birth of Christ with some outside events, alongside our online services, which were enjoyed by members of our regular congregation and lots of newcomers that we swept along with us!

Christmas Carols, which we held on Sunday 19th December, outside The Red Lion was a great event with over 50 of us singing along to favourite carols. It was very festive and a wonderful way to get together in the lead up to Christmas. We had a lot of fun!

Christmas Carols outside The Red Lion, Stanstead Abbotts

We held The Christmas Journey on Christmas Eve. We met at St Margarets Station, with many in attendance dressed as shepherds and angels. We then walked to St Andrew’s Church, along the high street, as we reimagined the Christmas Journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Unfortunately, there was no room at any inn where we stopped to sing carols and hear the Bible readings! By the time we reached the ‘stable’ at St Andrew’s we had swelled in number. It was a really fantastic event with lots of children getting involved and, of course, big thanks to our inn keepers and their patrons for joining in so enthusiastically.

Thanks to all who helped organise these events and all those who joined us in person.
